Innovation is a key component of delivering the FMT vision of ‘Making Financial Markets’ work for the poor. FMT leverages its expertise in financial and economic inclusion to define problem statements focused on the poor and surface and incubate African developed FinTechs within the SADC region. Through the i2i (insight2impact) programme funded by the MasterCard Foundation, FMT has gained deep knowledge and expertise in running ‘Hackathons’ on the continent and successfully developed and supported DataHack4FI for four years.
Innovation and Investment Challenge: Innovation and FinTech remains key to delivering on our drive to support digitisation in the SADC region. FMT facilitates regional and country Hackathons to surface SADC-developed FinTech solutions. The process includes incubation for identified ideas/solutions for young innovation entrepreneurs, potential pilot opportunities and, if possible, further funding.
SADC Innovation Ecosystem: The success of innovation in the region rests on the ecosystem to support incubation. FMT has scoped the Ecosystem in the region with this objective and is assessing areas to improve and support the ecosystem to ensure that potential innovations and solutions are able to leverage the ecosystem to the benefit of the broader region.
